Shunsuke Francois Nanjo:
I have designed this Utopia for you

About the Exhibition.

The art throughout the centuries has been enriched in its proposals and its forms of expression. But looking closer to it, it is about a single question, What is Humanbeing?and through this fundamental question, artists in the past have built and shaped the Utopia that we dream of, highlighted by our desires and our fears, our strengths and our weaknesses, our differences and possibilities. If my research has always been influenced more by the heterotopia, a real Utopia that exists in our lives and society, it has become important to define my personal utopia, my own vision of the World. Thus came the idea to create these islands.

The sculpture is from my series of research on uninhabited islands across the world's oceans, researched on maps and satellite photographs. If these islands are well existing, and could be called as Temporary Autonomous Zones (Hakim Bey), I have close to the japanese hakoniwa culture. The will of building a microcosm coming from Edo era, as small piece of utopian island, is a way to represent the World, and to build a new one that we are inspired into. Islands, or fragments of mountains, connected by blood vessels, hearts, skeletons, like a living beast, changing, but ultimately is, because Utopias are changing its shape in our mind..

Alice Wang:
The Souvenir

Alice Wang, born in 1984 in Taiwan, completed Royal Art of College in England. After coming back to Taiwan she established her own bland and has been creating products which are based on a concept that design should be attributed to human nature.

In this exhibition "The Souvenir" Wang presents an installation work inspired by confusion and void occurred by 911 attack in the US. When losing the most beloved one, people would hope to preserve/record/document the last moment of him/her. The last moments, such as "Last breath", "Last heart beat" and "Last voice" can be recorded into devices Wang manufactured. These devices are just like very sophisticated products and its simplicity gives out strong messages.

The Souvenir

Besides, the image is actually a movie which the viewer will find dim light moves across the landscape.

Yasushi Ebihara:
Noise

There was an old videotape. When I watched the movie recorded on the tape, it seemed to have worn away that there were many scanning lines on the screen. The scanning lines become colors and dominate the screen violently. One scene in a certain movie, what is the girl behind the noise looking at and thinking about? The face taken from the continuous time frames stays there as it is. There must be context and faces, that should have been, in the consecutive segments that go back and forth.

That symbolizes its life and there is a moment of silence depicted on Noise caused by the gap in time and memory.
It raises a relationship of silence and noise by referring movie as motif and there won’t be anything left with us after watching movie.

Only the things we felt while watching movie are the things we could keep and the detail of them will disappear in time. In every moment that we live in extremely relates to our memory and time. Light of the moment, and its life is one of the blink of light in vast time. The moment of noise, occurred and disappeared in time of human’s consumption, will open the door to infinite space-time.

NOISE Concept:

Tomodachi-ya

“Hi, this is Tomodachi-ya. Does anyone need friends?” A fox came up with an idea to start a business called “Tomodachi-Ya”. He will become a friend of someone for 100 Yen per 1 hour. A bear called him one day, and he had a meal with the bear. He earned 200 Yen for eating unwanted strawberries ended up with a stomachache. “Hello, this is Tomodachi-ya! Does anyone need friends?” A wolf called him another day, and he played cards with the wolf. After enjoying the time, he asked for the payment and the wolf was...? This is a fairy tale. Happy ending does not end.

Atsuko Imaizumi:
Listening

There are moments when your mind suddenly hears something and you know that you are about to realize something you have never realized before or come to understand something you have never understood before. You stop and listen intently to that 'something.' Sometimes it is surprisingly easy to fathom. While at other times that something' slips right out of your hands just as you are about to grasp it. I attempted to capture and express those sudden, thrilling yet perplexing moments in my paintings.

Alter Ego

Shadows and mirrors project existence of objects. The images reflected are the objects themselves, however, they are not real but obscure. I am curious about where the certainty and the uncertainty co-exist. The objective shows various expressions in the ever-changing environment and the stream of the time. There always exist things contradicting to each other together. In the other words, there maybe exist contradicting factors inside myself who is looking at the objective. My aim is to capture the conflicting aspects of the object by going beyond the time axis. The oil paint, which is fascinating and rich like butter cream, has an abundant phenomenon that is brought by chance. This arouses my imagination more over. I am capable of capturing these various expressions only by means of layering paints with my paint brushes.

Alter Ego

Anna Oya:
Dawn of the beginning

Dawn of the beginning I believe that stories give us hopes. Those who are alive have not reached to their end but each one curries unspecified uneasiness. However, how about the stories? They always come to the end. If these endings will cure us, we can hope our lives more, can't we? Although the appearance of the new diseases makes our society alarmed, it is important for me to cure the smallest ones. I wish we can live our lives with hopes no matter how small they would be.
